Small & Mid-sized Business

Detailed Explanation

There are two ways that Momentum Bay can help businesses to purchase green power:

  • brokered deal for just your business(es), or
  • aggregated purchase, securing possibly an even greater volume discount by purchasing with other businesses.

In either situation, here’s the simple, seven-step process that we’ll go through together in order to help you start saving money on commercial electricity:

1. Notarized* Limited Power of Attorney for ONLY Electricity (also referred to as an LPA-e)

Customer appoints Momentum Bay as exclusive agent regarding only electricity for a limited time period. This delegation of responsibility enables Momentum Bay to negotiate bulk electricity purchase on behalf of entire group & execute purchase in one business day.

You can usually find a Notary Public at your bank or workplace.

2. Copy of Most Recent Electricity Bill

We ask that you submit a copy of your most recent electricity bill. The bill helps us verify the name, service address & 21-digit Electric Service Identifier (ESI ID) on the bill. You’ll copy these three items onto the Letter of Authorization (described in step #4 below). Your bill helps us quantify how much you will save.

3. Letter of Authorization (also referred to as the LOA)

Customer completes, prints, signs & faxes or mails an LOA. Momentum Bay requests your usage by submitting your LOA to your Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU; e.g., CenterPoint Energy).

4. TDU Emails Usage

TDU emails each meter’s 12-month usage & load profile data to Momentum Bay as an Excel workbook. REPs require this data for any service location that has a meter, even new construction, because they upload this data into their financial pricing models.

For aggregations, Momentum Bay combines this confidential data into a master workbook for negotiation with (REPs).

5. Financial eligibility

REP performs customer’s Credit Check (typically simply a utility credit check, not full credit check, depending on projected usage).

6. Brokered or Aggregated Purchase

Lastly, we can purchase your renewable electricity as either a broker (for only your organization) or an aggregator (pooling your anticipated load with one or more other commercial customers, typically those with a similar usage pattern). In either case, there are two steps to purchasing: indicative pricing, & transactional pricing.

First, REPs will provide us with indicative pricing, that is, energy prices for various contract lengths based on your estimated usage but not specific to your load profile or usage pattern. We’ll discuss with you these indicative prices & the attributes of your green power (i.e., generated when, where, at what facility & how) in order to agree how you’d like to proceed. These attributes are most important for compliance with green building certification.

Then, we go back to the REP that interests you most, & we request indicative pricing specific to your organization’s usage, credit, etc. Based on our understanding of your desires in previous conversations, we will monitor electricity prices & execute a green power purchase on your behalf. Neither Momentum Bay nor the winning REP ever takes title to electricity. As a broker or aggregator, we have to sign all purchase agreements in the same business day (prices are good only through 4 PM since markets can fluctuate significantly). The final discounted price (or, rate per kWh) will depend on many factors, e.g., the load size & profile; the contract term (6 to 60 months for brokered electricity; 36, 48 or 60 months for aggregatations); market conditions that day that are influenced by natural gas inventories, weather & other disruptions; etc.

7. Post-Purchase Documentation & Marketing/PR Support

After your successful green power purchase, we’ll help you communicate the wisdom & positive impacts of your purchase.

First, we’ll package for you the winning REP’s Letter of Attestation detailing the attributes of your green power purchase, specifically, when it was/will be generated, where & at what facility it was/will be generated, what type of generation it was/will be (e.g., solar, wind, biomass, etc.).

Second, we’ll help you receive FREE recognition by joining the EPA’s Green Power Partnership & Leadership Club (for only organizations that purchased 100% green power).

Third, we’ll provide electronically a simple quantifications of many of the financial & ecological benefits of your purchase.

Finally, we’ll provide electronically a graphically designed Thank You Letter explaining these benefits so that you can communicate them with staff, clients & media.

We look forward to
helping your organization
save money & go green.
